Firefox: Open in new tab

2

Jez just emailed:

Now that I´ve made the switch to Firefox (on Linux, too!), I´m *really* starting to get annoyed by all the websites which open links in new browser windows, rather than new tabs.

My reply:

There is a preference setting for this, but it is “hidden” by default.

To enable it – browse to “about:config” and scroll down to browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – this is false by default, double click to set it to true.

Now, if you go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced, under the “Tabbed Browsing” section, there will be a checkbox entitled “Force links that open new windows to open in: “, and you can either select for them to open in the same tab or a new tab.  Hurrah!

Hope this relieves you of your annoyances.  Maybe I should blog it…

Bill Gates’ Think Week

0

There’s an absolutely fascinating article in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal about Bill Gates’ biannual solo retreats to the countryside to read MS research papers.

What a great idea; I’m sure even we mere mortals could benefit from a quiet week(end) away occasionally with no distractions and a pile of decent reading material.  Must try it after The Wedding – too much left to organise before then!

Transparent laptop screens (..or are they?)

0

Here’s something neat to try over the long four-day weekend:  making your notebook screen appear “transparent” by setting the desktop wallpaper to a photograph of the wall (or whatever) behind.  There are some impressive photos of the results at this Flickr gallery.  (via BoingBoing)

MS UK .Net Developer Event

0

Via Mike Pelton’s blog I just heard about a free “developer to developer” event taking place on Saturday 14th May at Microsoft’s Reading campus.  Looks interesting, and a change from the usual MSDN roadshow format, so I’ve registered to attend.  Also, this is taking place on one of the few Saturdays in 2005 when I’m *not* attending a wedding or stag do :-)

Half of me thinks this is incredibly sad, the other half is desperate to get out a roll of tape and give it a go.

Please let us know if you would like the veggie option (baked goats cheese parcel), as we are aware that many non-veggies won’t fancy the salmon.

IE7 plans emerge…

1

Mostly security enhancements, according to Microsoft Watch.

“New” features include tabbed browsing and support for transparent PNGs.  No comment yet on whether full support will be given for CSS2 – *sigh*.

Curiously, there’s also talk that IE7 will feature an integrated news aggregator, which can only help to fuel the popularity of the RSS medium – there are very many PC users out there who use email and browse the web daily, but have never seen the need to install a separate news reader.  Having such a tool pre-installed on their new PCs will put the technology in their face and make it easier to give RSS/Atom feeds a try.
